Here at FlippGen we’re crying out for silence from the constant connectivity that comes with smartphones.
We’re positively flipping out over the old school back-to-basics analogue phones of yesteryear.
Our selection of phones (flip phones / basic phones / feature phones / dumb phones) are perfect for those who want a simpler device for calls and texts; for anyone seeking a reliable backup phone; or for those who want a healthier relationship with their phone.
Our Suggestions
Age 11-13
Only a very basic phone, with no apps, and no internet browser.
Age 14-16
Still no social media until 16+, but can have more features than 11-13.
Recycle / Upcycle
Hand-me-downs are a great option for anyone looking for their first mobile phone. With a thorough clean, perhaps a new battery or case, this is the original way to get a truly authentic FlippGen style mobile phone.
Not only will you be doing good for the planet, you’ll also be doing good for your bank balance too.
Why not ask your family or friends if they have any old mobile phones tucked away - usually in the kitchen drawers or a box in the loft! Flip phones, brick phones, basic phones, feature phones - anything retro that’s not a smartphone. Oh, and don’t forget the charger for it!

Camera
If the phone has a camera, make sure it does not have a ‘selfie camera’ – only a rear camera.
Sim Cards
When you get a SIM card for your new basic phone, make sure that it has no data roaming, only calls and texts, so that you cannot access or use the internet. Also check that it does not support WIFI. Remove all temptations!
PLEASE NOTE:
FlippGen does not receive any financial remuneration from the manufacturers, retailers, or any third parties for the phones listed on our website.
The choice as to which phone might be right for you is entirely personal and a matter for you and your parent or guardian.

The benefits of a smartphone free childhood:
Fewer Distractions
Basic phones are just for calling and texting, so they don’t have many games, any apps, or internet access. This means they won’t distract you from homework or playtime.
Less Screen Time
Since basic phones don’t have big screens for watching videos or playing games, you’ll spend less time looking at screens, which is better for your eyes and sleep.
Privacy
With basic phones, there’s less chance of accidentally sharing too much personal information or running into risky stuff online. They’re more private and simpler to use safely.
Less Stress
Smartphones can have a lot of notifications and messages that might stress you out. Basic phones keep things simple and focus on staying connected without extra pressure.
Encourages Real-Life Fun
Without the temptation of apps or games, you might find yourself spending more time doing fun activities in real life, like playing outside, reading, or hanging out with friends and family.
Affordable
Basic phones are cheaper, so it’s easier on the family budget. You can still have a phone to stay connected without spending a lot of money. Also, if it’s misplaced or lost then it’s easier to replace.
Long Battery Life
Basic phones often last longer on a single charge, so you don’t have to worry about finding a charger all the time.
Durable
Basic phones are usually tough and can handle a few drops without breaking. They’re great for kids who might not be as careful with their stuff.
