Instagram Teen Accounts
Instagram introduced Teen Accounts in 2024, which come with automatic protections for under-18s. Here's what they mean and how to make the most of them.
What Happens Automatically for Under-18s
Accounts are set to private by default.
Sensitive content filters are turned on.
Direct messages are restricted to people they already follow or are connected to.
A daily screen time reminder appears after 60 minutes.
A bedtime mode mutes notifications after 10pm.
Setting Up Parental Supervision
Open Instagram and go to your child's profile.
Tap the three-line menu > Settings > Supervision.
Follow the steps to link your account as a parent/guardian.
You'll receive a link to confirm on your own Instagram account.
What you can manage
See how much time your child spends on Instagram.
Set a daily time limit.
Review who follows them and who they follow (with their permission).
Tip: Under-16s can't turn off Teen Account protections without a parent approving it. For 16–17 year olds, they can adjust settings themselves — so the conversation matters too.
